The Zombie Atheist Movement

zombiea

I’m back but I’m not a zombie

My friend Vjack  over at Atheist Revolution has a post titled “The Day The Atheist Movement Died”. In case you haven’t noticed I’ve been absent from this blog, that has been due to another issue that need to be addressed. Now, as I bring my attention back to the atheist/skeptical community what do I see?  The EXACT SAME bullshit as when I stopped paying attention to it months ago. Stephanie Zvan is still complaining about the evil slymepit and acting as if when she has a bowel movement the world is showered with the aroma of rose petals. Rebecca Watson is still milking her claim that she is the primary target of all internet misogynists and gets a majority of the hate that exists on the net. I guess she still feels there is some doubt as to her motives. By now it’s pretty clear you prefer to have the spotlight pointed at you Rebecca, not only do you prefer it but you need it. Hide behind your lame snark and belittle as many critics as you like I find it sad you can’t see past the little crowd that support your hobby of self interest and realize how much respect you’ve lost among a larger portion. Those people don’t bother to even say anything to you so it’s easy to be unaware. It’s not like anyone has tried to bring this to your attention.

Ophelia Benson is still getting things wrong and then trying to play it off as though there is nothing that could prove her to be mistaken. She just twists her points into something else like someone making a balloon animal and then with a squeak and a twist turning it into something else every time the kids point out the shape looks nothing like any animal.

PZ Myer’s is of course doing the same old shit. Who expects any change from that tired old broken record? He is doomed to sitting in a room isolated from the real world except when someone who knows no better asks him to regurgitate some of his rambling  basic knowledge and un-witty wit at a conference. Even the general public can debate and make their points better than PZ these days so the need for him to point out the obvious will grow less and less as time passes.

Anthony what’s-his-name Brownian is STILL blaming me because he is too stupid to understand how facebook works or how the alphabet is not a super secret spy code people have to decipher before they can understand it lots of people can figure it out in their heads…..amazing! I’m afraid that idiot is determined to cry himself to death over the claim I dox’ed him. Or maybe he is hoping he can get a pity fuck out of it if he whines long enough. Pretty obvious he could use it cause that dude screams uptight virgin.

Social Justice Warriors are still finding new ways to claim (cry) that the world (men) is out to get them. Unfortunately for them there has been no real change in anything except the public awareness that they are not worthy of notice. They have now reached the point where if any real problem were to arise they wouldn’t be effective in bringing attention to it because of the past history of bullshit which follows them.

i wonder if any of these people took a few months off as I did and then came back if maybe, just maybe they would realize how little effectiveness they have on anything except to cause people to waste time pointing out how/why they are misguided.

Of course Jennifer McCreight  took some time off and still thinks she can make declarations about skeptics atheists or any other damn thing and be considered an authority despite the fact she has removed herself. PZ Myers Rebecca Watson and many others have told us they want nothing to do with or have no place in the atheist/skeptical movement yet they continue to comment on it and criticize it as though they are an active part. They are like skeptic/atheist zombies limping along grumbling about shit no one can understand as people scramble to get away from the stench and negative attitude. One thing does work in our favor, these zombies are also cannibals and that has been the most effective way of getting rid of them to date.

I guess something have changed a little. I see people much more quick to call the SJWs and certain feminists on their bullshit and not so afraid of the McCarthy Feminist Patrol (also known as skepchick)  That’s a good sign. And I see the good old slymepit is still happily smacking down the crap as it comes to the surfac… or are those rose petals? Brains…..

Conditions on Conversation

blog

Something interesting happened the other day. Justin Vacula and David Silverman had an exchange on twitter. Dave was taking issue with Justin not being vocal enough about bad behavior from his “side” ( note:there is no one, two or ten sides to this. There are way more than that. Trying to simplify it as two sides shows a lack of understanding about the issue)  At one point David said this –

@justinvacula for example, the fake pic of @rebeccawatson in sexually demeaning position. Can you agree that’s shit? Publicly?

i don’t know what pic Dave is talking about. I don’t pay attention to that kind of shit and I don’t mention it because I assume people will know I do not approve of those types of pics. To draw attention to such idiotic behavior is to give the person who created it exactly what they want , attention. If you do not then people of this caliber will almost always go away. A need for attention is the entire reason for creating such a pic.

Sometimes even asking a question is insulting.  I wonder how Dave would feel if someone on CNN asked him if he thought child porn was a bad thing. I imagine he would scoff and maybe even hesitate before answering such a question because it would ( i hope ) be unexpected. Would he wonder why he was being asked such a question? Would he be just a little offended that someone would feel they needed to ask him if he was against child porn?

@justinvacula hate and threats against your opposition is the wrong thing about which to be silent.

Something really bothers me about the demand David Silverman made before he would have a conversation with Justin. Maybe because it was public and didn’t need to be. It kinda made Justin look bad when he really didn’t deserve it. Far worse behavior has been witnessed, calling  Justin out on this is a strange place to begin addressing bad behavior. Hasn’t Justin been misrepresented enough? I know he can take it but it is almost as if David was just bored or frustrated and needed to vent on someone. Did David Silverman feel like it was his chance to teach Justin a valuable lesson in life and he just chose to do it in a disrespectful manner?  I suppose only David knows the answer but I know I was uncomfortable reading the exchange. It was another instance where the leader of a large organization picked out an Individual to criticize in a public forum.  Justin has put himself in the middle of things, but again , there are others who would benefit more from the lesson David was attempt to teach IMO.

The exchange continued-

@MrAtheistPants are you going to condemn the way PZ has described people like myself? Disagreement is not trolling.

@JimMacDonaldMMA quit crying. We will deal with this one issue at a time. Step one is no anonymous hate, threats of violence, shit.

So David says “one step at a time” regarding PZ then this happens-

David Silverman, a principled atheist: Go to twitter now: David Silverman (@MrAtheistPants) is tearing the ath… http://bit.ly/14y2yqF

    David Silverman, a principled atheist

Atheism

by PZ Myers

Go to twitter now: David Silverman (@MrAtheistPants) is tearing the atheist trolls a new one. This is really what I like to see: a leader of a major atheist organization taking an unambiguous stand against this ulcer in our midst, and repudiating the spammy, photoshopping, lying behavior of the anti-feminist clique.

How much do I appreciate it? With my dollars. My wife is going to sign us up for a lifetime membership in American Atheists while I’m away. It’s not a casual investment, so not everyone can do that, but you could send them a donation to let the organization know that you like a leader with a spine.

Here is where the real problem starts-
  1. Thanks! : David Silverman, a principled atheist: Go to twitter now: David Silverman is tearing the ath…

  2. Thank you for your support! We’d be proud to have you as a Life Member!

  3. you’re not listening. I tried to help. Please consider what I’ve written and meant. Gotta go.

So PZ Myers and Ophelia Benson are like two old squawking vultures circling David and Justin waiting for David to deal the last blow to the guy who has been disrupting their feeding time. David actually acknowledges PZ with a tweet/wave. At this point as you can see they are right in the middle of David calling on Justin to condemn behavior he had no active part in and has never made excuses for except to say nothing.  David Silverman has a perfect opportunity to address another large part of the problem. All he had to do was make the play-field level, apply the same rules to everyone. David should have asked the same thing of PZ  and Ophelia as he did of Justin. Of course PZ would have had to condemn himself if he were to properly answer David’s request. It would have been interesting to watch what happened.

Instead we get PZ throwing a reward at David and American Atheists as if there had been a WANTED sign with Justin’s name on it.

David Silverman does mention donations and new memberships later on in the evening so I guess we can credit Justin Vacula for doing more good work on behalf of atheism. If it were not for Justin no one would have been inclined to donate and PZ most likely wouldn’t have signed his wife and himself up as a lifetime members. PZ did make it sound like he had been holding off on offering his wife until a worthwhile deed was done. One worthy of his wife’s lifetime pledge. Justin attempting to get David Silverman on his podcast was that special thing PZ was waiting for. Seems odd to me but whatever PZ wants to give as a reward is his business, not mine.

To be fair David Silverman probably doesn’t know about all the childish, divisive, and hypocritical antics of the few FTB bloggers and Skepchicks. I wouldn’t expect him to, he has (I hope) better things to do up until now.

That has changed a little bit now. When David demanded a certain level of behavior from Justin then he set the bar. Neither The Lord of Hate PZ  or The Queen of Stalking Ophelia could  currently touch that bar even if they had a ladder.  That needs to change now. Since they both thought it was the greatest thing since sliced bread watching David get Justin Vacula under control it should be just as entertaining when it happens to them. Will it happen? Will the bar be set at the same height for everyone? I hope so because if it isn’t I have a feeling there is going to be some fallout from that, as there should be.

As a sideline I should mention I think David had the right idea in mind. No one should be correct by default and no one is always wrong. There should be more instances of people talking about things they agree about and making sure the unfair and pointless responses on either side get little or no attention.

Atheists and Skeptics and Psychics Oh My!

So I’ve been using this new software….It’s pretty cool.
I have been using it to express my displeasure and/or make observations about some skeptics and atheists who aren’t quit acting in a manner that demonstrates skepticism or represents atheism in a good way….In my opinion of course.

It’s is pretty much all in good fun. As you will see below I am not afraid to laugh at myself. I think it builds character and sometimes checks your ego when/if it is needed. I will admit that my choice of actors was directly effected by the actions of certain people who have misrepresented my motives and/or character in the past. Instead of telling lies or making stuff up the way they do, I instead choose to find the humor and irony in their behaviors and put them on public display.  This might just give anyone who listens to these people cause to pause and consider how much credibility they have, or maybe it will just make them giggle. You can choose to be offended or take it personal if you wish. If you do then maybe you should be taking a good look at yourself first because I’ve noticed those feelings usually come from within. It’s kinda like looking in a fun-house mirror, only the reflection is how you look in real life. Do you blame the person who is holding the mirror for your reflection?

Viddy well,

To show I’m not just picking on poor old PZ and the gang I’ll post the last video about Chip Coffey. You may know him from Paranormal State or Psychic Kids on A&E. You can also learn about him here

And this is a video parody of a ‘psychic’ named Robbie Thomas. Robbie Thomas claims to be able to find the bodies of children who have been abducted. One time Robbie got so pissed at me in a chat that he told me I would be sorry when I needed his services to help find my disabled son one day. You can learn more about this model of compassion here

And last but not least, well yea, least……we have Peter Popoff. James Randi took care of him a long time ago but as usually happens Peter crawled out from under his rock and he is back. You can catch him doing late night infomercials for his ‘miracle spring water’. I did as Peter asked and sent a request. This video gives a run down on how that went. Note: Peter no longer sends me mail.

The following is an email correspondence between Thaumas Themelios and Ophelia Benson regarding a deleted comment on Ophelia’s blog (http://www.butterfliesandwheels.org/2011/focus/), which was later re-posted here: http://gnuatheism.wikispaces.com/Elevator+Guy+Kerfuffle

The purpose of publishing this correspondence is to document Ophelia’s stated reasons for deleting the post, at the time the deletion occurred, to allow for accurate commentary and criticism in relation to ongoing discussions regarding the origins and development of several major controversies related to atheist and skeptical communities, of which this discussion is a recent example: http://www.michaelnugent.com/2013/03/15/eight-choices-we-can-make-to-help-move-beyond-the-rifts-in-the-atheist-and-skeptical-communities/

Hi Ophelia,

If you would be more clear on what’s wrong with my posts, I would
attempt to change how I post. Just telling me to ‘stop it’ doesn’t give
me anything to go on. Stop doing what exactly?

Sometimes they’re long. I’ve got a lot to say and feel the need to be
clear so that I’m not misinterpreted (as happens so frequently in this
particular discussion). But it appears that just length isn’t your
concern, since some long stuff goes through and others get deleted
without warning.

Thaumas

P.S.
Here is a comment I would like to post. I think it addresses important
issues. If you let me know what you object to, I could modify it, or
refrain from posting:

@Godless Heathen

The shitstorm had already started over Rebecca’s comment about the
guy propositioning her in the elevator at 4am. The McGraw stuff
brought that comment to a wider audience. Most of that audience did
NOT listen to the original comment themselves and started going nuts
because they thought they were being told to never hit on women
anywhere, ever or they thought “Oh-My-God-How-Will-I-Ever-Get-Laid
if I can’t ask a woman for “coffee” in an enclosed space at 4
AM????? OHMYGOD, now I’m doomed to be a single, shy, lonely guy
forevar!!!!

I use ‘shitstorm’ to refer to people making unfounded accusations
against one another, leading to largescale vilification, escalation, and
entrenchment on both sides.

The comments on the video were largely anonymous and usually just
expressed a different opinion. Yes, some were over-the-top misogyny, and
others were examples of the escalation pattern I’ve been describing.
It’s of course worth going after the actual misogyny and sexism that
occurred. But this kind of thing has occurred many times before, and it
never got to the point of people Dawkins getting involved and caught up
in the vilification.

This kind of thing would have run its course on its own, probably with
RW unambiguously coming out way ahead. In fact, it had already been
through the blogosphere once (the AronRa video) and didn’t get
Pharyngulated. What gave it extra juice was the McGraw incident, when
several attendees and others took issue with Watson’s treatment of
McGraw. At this point, we have a clear example of the escalation pattern
against someone who states herself that she was grossly misrepresented
and was not in any way supportive of misogyny, nor was she ‘anti-woman’.

This was again escalated with the Naming Names post, et voila, the
shitstorm ensues.

Why was this the beginning of the shitstorm and not before? Because
people (many feminists among them) who spoke up defending McGraw got
tarred with the same brush as the actual misogynists and sexists. In
fact, that’s the brush that McGraw herself got tarred with. This is when
the assuming of malicious intentions got so out of whack that feminists
were attacking feminists as anti-woman, when really it was a matter of
difference of opinion over a hot topic.

The same pattern of vilification is evident with the treatment of
Richard Dawkins. I’ll note that Rebecca Watson has herself been a victim
of such vilification. That is why I’m attempting to leave out my
personal opinion and only report Watson’s actions, rather than speculate
as to her motives. In the end, the motives don’t make much of a
difference, it’s the behaviour that perpetuates the cycle.

Hi Thaumas,

Maybe there wouldn’t be much wrong with them (though they’d still be too long,
but then so are some others, for my taste) taken independently, but after all
those endless detailed ones about McGraw they’re just too much. Some long stuff
goes through because I don’t like to delete, but the basic reason is just too
much too much. Plus you’re repeating yourself – but then we all are.

I think I’ll just close comments soon.

Okay.
In my defence I’ll just say that I only repeated myself when others
repeated the same misunderstandings. However, I take your point.
Also, I kept posting in response to others responding to me. But again,
I take your point.

I’ll just post that one last reply (because it is to a comment directly
in response to me) and will sign off at the end of it. Sorry for taking
up your time.

No problem. Sorry I was snappish. I get antsy when comments spiral out of
control, as they keep doing on this subject. I hope nothing new happens that
prompts me to bring it up again. Arrrrrgh.
