The Supreme Court and Politics
JohnH
Little noticed by the media is the political activity engaged in by some on the Supreme Court. Most of this political activity is very right wing. Both Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas have appeared at gatherings of right wing groups. Thomas's wife Virginia has been actively involved with the tea party.

I am not at all naive enough to think that judges have no political beliefs. Nor, do I expect these beliefs to be anything but basically conservative. One could not become a judge without a commitment to the existing order.

It is one thing to have political beliefs as a judge but it is significantly different to promote political causes as a judge. Active political promotion by a judge particularly a Supreme Court judge is at least unseemly. Judges have a responsibility to appear as impartial as possible. Active political promotion by a judge has to imply a level of partiality that should cause media concern. In the case of Scalia and Thomas it is essentially ignored. There is a clear reason for this.

I cannot imagine the media outcry if a sitting Supreme appeared at a socialist gathering. A single such occasion would have significant media attention for a long time. Political participation in right groups is acceptable.

The american "left wing" media can ignore political activity that is damaging if it comes from a conservative direction. They would be dramatically concerned if a sitting Supreme would appear to be anywhere close to left of center.

Thomas and Scalia both have some explaining to do about their connection to the Koch brothers and Thomas may have some perjury issues brought up in the near future.

Not that anything will happen...IOKIYAR.

I haven't respected the SCOTUS since 2000.

The problem with these conservative Supremes is that they feel that they are immune from any reprisals for their obvious right wing leanings because the left, basically, is too polite and 'sensitive' to raise a big enough stink that there would ever be any repercussions about it.

If only the left would become as insensitive as the right. If only they would come out swinging and unconcerned about the damage their blows incurred. If only they would act like the conservatives then they would find them selves in a position of control, of power..... They would find themselves.........conservatives.
I'll drink to that. Or anything else for that matter.

The thing that is important to me is that the media and the public in general have been trained to believe that participation in conservative, even very conservative, politics is acceptable.

The thought that tipped me on this one was considering what might have happened if a Supreme had come out for a single payer health plan. There would have been immediate cries for impeachment. Cries from the right that would have been carried and even encouraged by the main stream media.

It is mostly the difference in media coverage that I am interested in. I have seen no one except in the openly left media that has even commented much on Scalia and Thomas. Yet both should have been threatened with impeachment.

This is partially the timidity of the left in this country. And, no I do not consider the democratic party as part of the left. But, at least some democrats should have made comment. None have to my knowledge.
