Shouting Fire in a Crowded Theater
JohnH
Through odd mechanisms I learned today that this quote attributed to Olive Wendel Holmes Jr. was in furtherance of a unanimous decision of the Supremes to uphold a decision that sent yiddish speaking socialists to jail for their opposition to american involvement in World War I.

I knew about the Palmer Raids which more or less destroyed the IWW and the jailing of Eugene V. (for victory) Debs all because of their opposition to US involvement in World War I. I never knew until today that this innocuous and clear statement of what speech could be suppressed was used to suppress what was legitimate political speech.

I become more and more discouraged about the capacity of humans to react with one another. How can genuine political belief be conflated with putting others at risk with intent.

We throw out our principles whenever they become inconvenient.

I fear for the political class that it is worse than that seeker: They scramble for some principle, when we inconveniently pull them up for their shit.

Wait, you used the words political class and principles in the same sentence without a qualifying negative.

I believe they will accept any principle if it gets them what they (their good friends in the private sector) want.

Then you are really saying they have no principles at all.

Ha, yes seeker, that was my point.
