Van Gogh's ear - Was it Gauguin'?

Interesting speculation about what happened to Van Gogh. I'm sure everyone is familiar with the story, and now a couple of historians say it may not have played out like we were taught.

It wouldn't surprise me, since much of history hasn't appeared to be what we were taught.

The second story at least makes much more sense than the first, though I don't understand why they'd want to hide the truth.

It makes better copy to say that van Gogh cut off his own ear. Y'know, 'tortured artist' and all that.
